Potential Scam Targets Food Establishments

It has come to the attention of District Seven Health Department staff that food establishments in Idaho and other states may be the potential victims of a scam. Letters from a "Idaho Food Service Compliance Center" have been sent to food establishments indicating that they are required to have hand washing signs and/or posters at each hand washing sink in their facility. The letter uses intimidation and threats of a "$2500 fine, suspension or revocation of license, as well as possible civil liability actions" if they don't comply by purchasing "approved" hand washing posters from the Idaho Service Compliance Center.

Food Establishment Owners/Managers should be advised that the Idaho Food Code does require that some type of sign or poster reminding employees to wash their hands be visible at hand washing stations. However, there is no fine imposed for not having signs. In addition, the signs or posters do not need to be in any one specific format. In fact, District Seven Health Department's food inspectors actually provide food establishments with needed signs.
