Beware of Scam
Selling Handwashing Posters
Several States Reporting Complaints
from Restaurateurs
The New
Mexico Restaurant Association urges you to use caution if
approached by a business called "New Mexico Food Service
Compliance Center." Several members already have
called NMRA to complain about the questionable posters
marketed by the company. The scam involves restaurateurs
receiving official-looking flyers that promote "Approved Hand
Washing Posters" for $19.95 each plus shipping.
The
flyers state that new regulations incorporated into the "State
and Federal Food Code" require the 11X17 full-color posters be
placed at every handwashing station including restrooms. The
flyers also state that the signs may not be self-made and they
must be ordered from this company. New Mexico law
does not require these particular
posters. You are under no obligation to purchase the
posters.
Research on the Internet also has turned up
complaints about the company's business practices in Ohio,
Michigan, Kentucky, Iowa and Kansas, including the Better
Business Bureau of Western Michigan.
NMRA has
contacted the New Mexico Attorney General's Office - Consumer
Fraud Division, and the New Mexico Department of
Health regarding the scam. They are now aware of the matter
and are investigating.
Please be
assured that the New Mexico Restaurant Association will always
inform you of any new requirements under the law. This is one
of your member
benefits. |
